Aralia 'Green'
Aralia 'Green'
Aralia (Aralia spp.) is native to the temperate forests of East Asia, particularly Japan, Korea, and parts of China. It prefers cool, moist climates and partial shade, growing in rich, loamy soil layered with decades of fallen leaves. Morning mists often roll through these forests, soaking the understory before midday sun filters gently through the canopy.
The air is still here, except for the rustling of deer or the flutter of pheasants. Aralia grows as a woody shrub or small tree, its large, divided leaves spreading like fingers to catch filtered light. Certain species, such as Aralia elata, are known locally as “angelica trees.” Their young shoots, blanched and edible, were traditionally harvested in spring and served in seasonal dishes. Bees visit its umbels of pale flowers, and birds feed on the berries that follow.
The stems are upright but flexible, lined with ridges and sometimes armed with fine prickles. The foliage has a tropical character despite its cold hardiness—an impression of lushness amid restraint.
Psychologically, the aralia suggests quiet strength and adaptability. It appears ornamental, even gentle, but it holds firm in wind and cold. The reserved elder—unassuming, but wise, with roots deep in tradition and a form that reflects both grace and endurance.
