Alocasia Polly 'African Mask'

Alocasia Polly 'African Mask'

Alocasia ‘Polly’ (Alocasia × amazonica)—often called the African Mask Plant—is native in lineage to the humid lowlands of Southeast Asia, where filtered light pools beneath dense tropical canopies and the air hums with moisture. In this dim, thriving world, Alocasia grows in rhythm with the rain, its broad leaves designed to collect water and direct it back to the roots below.

The ‘Polly’ variety is a living study in contrast. Each leaf, dark and glossy as obsidian, is traced with bold, silver-white veins that stand in sharp relief—geometry made organic. The edges curve slightly inward, tapering to fine points that catch light like carved metal. Its posture is upright, poised, almost statuesque—yet alive with quiet tension.

In cultivation, Alocasia ‘Polly’ thrives in warmth, humidity, and bright, indirect light. It prefers soil that remains moist but never heavy, responding quickly to both care and neglect. Though smaller than many of its relatives, its presence is commanding—a sculptural accent of deep green and silver.

In essence, ‘Polly’ embodies intensity with grace. It is alert, discerning, and deliberate—an emblem of vitality held just below the surface, waiting for the next touch of light.
