Succulent 'String of Bananas'

Succulent 'String of Bananas'

String of Bananas (Senecio radicans) is native to the dry plains of southern Africa, where sunlight reigns unfiltered and rain falls only in brief, unpredictable intervals. The soil is coarse and stony—more dust than earth—yet beneath its surface, roots hold tight, storing what little moisture passes through. Winds sweep freely across these open lands, carrying warmth by day and chill by night.

In such terrain, the plant’s trailing stems cascade along the ground like living filigree. Each leaf curves into a sleek, crescent form—green as sea glass and plump with stored water. These banana-shaped leaves, arranged along long, wiry vines, allow the plant to capture light efficiently while minimizing loss. When rain does come, it drinks deeply, holding each drop in reserve until the next scarcity arrives. Small white blooms, when they appear, release a faint cinnamon scent—an understated sweetness against the austerity of its home.

In cultivation, String of Bananas thrives in bright light and fast-draining soil. It prefers to dry slightly between waterings and will reward restraint with steady, trailing growth. Ideal for hanging baskets or high ledges, its vines can grow long and full, forming soft, living chains of green.

Succulent will arrive in a 4" pot. Plants may vary slightly from the pictures.
All succulents are carefully packed for shipment to ensure they arrive healthy, rooted, and ready to thrive.
