Hoya 'String Bean'

Hoya 'String Bean'

String Bean Hoya (Hoya shepherdii) is native to the montane forests of the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, where it grows epiphytically along tree trunks and moss-covered branches. The air is cool and humid, drifting with mist from the surrounding highlands. Light filters softly through the canopy, and rain arrives in steady cycles, followed by long intervals of damp stillness.

This distinctive species forms long, trailing vines lined with narrow, glossy leaves that resemble string beans—deep green, slightly curved, and firm to the touch. The foliage hangs in graceful lengths, giving the plant an elegant, cascading habit. In season, it produces rounded clusters of waxy, white star-shaped flowers about half an inch wide, each centered with a maroon eye. Their fragrance is rich and sweet, most pronounced in the evening hours.

In cultivation, Hoya shepherdii thrives in bright, indirect light and evenly moist, well-draining soil. Its slender leaves and cascading growth make it well suited to hanging displays, where air can move freely through its vines. Under patient care, it rewards the grower with texture, fragrance, and quiet rhythm—an enduring emblem of tropical refinement.
