Hoya Carnosa
Hoya Carnosa
Porcelain Flower (Hoya carnosa), also known as Wax Plant or Honey Plant, is native to the subtropical forests of East and Southeast Asia, where it climbs among tree trunks and rocky slopes in warm, humid air. It thrives in filtered light beneath the canopy, its roots anchored in loose, well-drained organic matter. Rain arrives in short bursts, followed by long hours of still, luminous humidity.
Its vines are slender yet resilient, sheathed in thick, leathery leaves of deep green, often speckled with silver or creamy white. The foliage is waxy and smooth, adapted to store water through dry intervals. Mature plants develop a woody framework, from which new shoots emerge each season, extending in measured, graceful growth.
Clusters of star-shaped flowers appear along the vines—pale pink to white with a red-centered corona. Their surfaces glisten like porcelain, and their fragrance intensifies toward evening. Nectar may bead at the tips, a clear sign of vitality.
In cultivation, Hoya carnosa prefers bright, indirect light and warm conditions with moderate humidity. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, and provide support for the vines to climb or coil. Long-lived and generous in bloom, it remains one of the most enduring and beloved species of the genus.
