Unlike rooted plants, they anchor to trees, cliffs, and even power lines, drawing moisture and nutrients from the air through specialized leaf scales called trichomes.

In the wild, morning mists bead on their leaves before the heat of day dries them. Hummingbirds pass close, visiting nearby blooms, while ants and small insects traverse their wiry forms. Certain species produce vivid tubular flowers, pollinated by moths or birds. Historically, some were used in weaving or as decorative festival garlands.
