Hoya 'Sweetheart Variegated'
Hoya 'Sweetheart Variegated'
Sweetheart (Hoya kerrii), also known as Lucky-heart or Wax Plant, is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Laos. It grows as a climbing epiphyte along warm, humid forest margins where sunlight is bright but filtered through layers of green. Rainfall is frequent yet brief, and air movement keeps the leaves dry despite constant moisture in the atmosphere.
Its most distinctive feature is the thick, heart-shaped leaf—smooth, glossy, and firm to the touch. In its variegated form, the green surface is bordered or splashed with soft yellow, a natural variation that brightens with strong light. The plant’s stems, when mature, become woody and sturdy, supporting slow but enduring growth. However, when sold as a single rooted leaf cutting, it remains a charming solitary heart, ornamental rather than developing into a vining specimen.
Hoya kerrii is among the most resilient of the Hoyas, tolerating periods of dryness and thriving in warmth. It prefers bright, indirect light and fast-draining soil. Its simplicity makes it both a collector’s curiosity and a symbolic gift—steady, lasting, and quietly endearing.
Please note: single-leaf cuttings do not produce vines or additional leaves.
