Hoya 'Australis'

Hoya 'Australis'

Waxvine (Hoya australis), also known as Honey Plant or Porcelain Flower, is native to the coastal forests of eastern and northern Australia, where it winds through rocky outcrops and the sunlit edges of rainforests. The climate is warm and humid, with seasonal rains followed by long, bright intervals. Here, it clings to stone and bark alike, thriving where roots find only pockets of detritus and moisture carried on the air.

Its vines are strong and flexible, climbing toward open light while maintaining a firm grip on their support. The leaves are thick, smooth, and oval—deep green, sometimes edged in lighter hues when grown in full sun. Clusters of waxy white flowers emerge from the nodes, each bloom with a central pink crown and a scent most noticeable in the stillness of early evening. Their fragrance draws butterflies and other pollinators in gentle swarms, a quiet spectacle beneath the canopy.

In cultivation, Hoya australis adapts easily to bright indoor light or filtered sun, growing equally well as a hanging or climbing plant. It embodies the ease of its native habitat—resilient, aromatic, and elegantly self-sufficient.

Varieties: Plants that are bred to deliver a range of interesting traits that affect sizes and colors are known as varieties.
